Trei culori cunosc pe lume
Ce le tin ca sfânt odor,
Sunt culori de-un vechi renume
Amintind de-un brav popor.
Cât pe cer si cât pe lume,
Vor fi aste trei culori,
Vom avea un falnic nume,
Si un falnic viitor.
Rosu-i focul vitejiei,
Jertfele ce-n veci nu pier
Galben, aurul câmpiei,
Si-albastru-al nostru cer.
Today the 1st of December is a very important day in Romania: it’s the 95th National Day (Ziuă Națională). On that day in 1918 the regions of Transylvania (which was under hungarian rule) and Basarabia were annexed to the historical old reign of Romania. As far as I know, Romanians are generally quite patriotic (or, at least, more than us italians) so they like to attend parades ad throw great parties, and girls like to paint their nails accordingly too! These are just some results I got for googling “manichiura patriotică” (patriotic manicure):
I wanted to do some patriotic design too today, and I decided to go for diagonal stripes on my nailtips. So I carefully applied the blue base, Kiko no. 249 Blu Indaco/ Indigo Blue (it looks way darker IRL)…
Then, using Kiko no° 355 (Giallo Canarino/Canary Yellow) I painted the center section of the flag… (this makes a nice Ukrainan flag design if you wish)
And eventually all screwed up when I tried to apply the red polish; alas, the scotch tape stripped away most part of the yellow polish, even if it appeared to be completely dry:
Turned out I needed both to allow more drying time and to apply a transparent base coat underneath the yellow layer… and since it’s a long and boring process, I fed up immediately after one fingernail. But I was still motivated on getting my manicure done, so I came out with this idea:
I put togheter these different design styles in order to convey the idea of an ongoing process: in the thumb, the color is a solid blue. In the index finger, you start to see something blurred. Then, a gradient (seriously, I love how it turned out, it’s the first time i achieve something so nice) starts showing clearly the three national colors, but they’re still blurry- then at the ring finger you a clear and sharply defined flag, while the design on the pinky looks like a three-color tailed comet.
The execution is quite simple; for the index and middle finger I used the sponge gradient technique, on the ring finger I used scotch tape and lots lots of patience in order to achieve clean lines, while the pinky fingernail was done with two brush strokes and a flower-shaped nail sticker.
The items I used:
- Essence protecting Base Coat
- Kiko nail polish no. 294 Blu Indaco/Indigo blue
- Kiko nail polish no. 355 Giallo Canarino/Canary yellow
- Lepo nail polish “Rinforzante allle alghe marine” no. 7 (bright red)
- Octagonal sponges from the Essence Nail art designer set
- Peggy Sage base brush from the 6 nail art brushes set
- Broadway flower nail sticker from blister no 838
Let me know if you like this manicure and if you’re going to recreate it on yourself! 🙂
La mulți ani!
